The Vaccination Challenge

Rescue groups holds a very solid place on the hearts of the people at Pawhaus Pet Boutique. We try to help as many as we can with fundraising efforts and donations - but unfortunately there seem to be more and more animals in need these days.
In our August newsletter we announced that 5% of our sales for that month would be donated to Big Heart Rescue for their Vaccination Challenge Event. Here are more details about the Vaccination Challenge and how you can help:
Big Heart Rescue is thrilled to announce that we will be heading to Bella Coola on September 5th and 6th to conduct our first Animal Wellness Clinic in this community!

Our team of vets, vet tech's and other volunteers hope to examine, vaccinate, de-worm, de-flea and medically support approximately 150 companion animals during this exciting two day event.

We are looking for your financial support via our Vaccination Challenge.

In Memory of Baby Ellawho died of Distemper and Parvo

Every $14 donated allows us to vaccinate one companion animal and this means you personally have helped to save a innocent soul from the horrific diseases of Parvo and Distemper. These diseases take far too many lives and cause needless suffering and death.

Will you help to save a life by donating $14 for a vaccination? You can make a difference!

Your invaluable donation can be made via PayPal, Canada Helps, Cheque or Money Order with instructions located on the
Donations page of this site.

Bessie + Barnie

Bessie & Barnie was founded by a group of forward-thinking fashion executives united in the common goal of creating a better living environment for all pets. They strive, at Bessie & Barnie, to design a collection of well-made products that are fun, functional and fashionable, all handcrafted in the United States.Their design inspiration derives from the latest trends in fashion and interiors, along with the constant leadership of our design gurus, Bessie and Barnie, the happiest, most loving dogs in the world. Working together, their team strives to ensure that "dogs have never been happier".

As we like to try out the products that we carry on the site - along with our shop order we also included a copy of harness for our two pugs, MeiMei and Mikodon't they look cute!!! The harnesses were very easy to put on them - even though MeiMei tends to be a squirmer when it comes to putting on a harness or collar. You just slip their head through the neck area and adjust the webbing that comes under their armpit (do dogs have an armpit?) to make a comfortable fit
Because of the soft, wide fabric that comes across their chest - it's important, especially for wide, barrel chested dogs, that the fit is comfortable for them and won't dig into them or that they could wiggle out of it.

Bessie + Barnie also comes in multiple, stylish trims and fabrics! So something so simple looks so great - and they are priced great too!

They also make beds! Delivered right to your door you can chose the best patterns and styles that flatter your dogs space - something that you will want to show off, not hide! All their products are made in the USA

Diva Dog Collection

Diva Dog is an amazing and stylish brand of pet products that we are proud to have at the Pawhaus Pet Boutique!

Their collars, harnesses and leashes are always ahead in style and quality. Their neck accessories for pets have always included a heavy, stainless steel buckle - which is strong and classy - but they have turned it up a notch and are now lighter weight! They have taken the beauty of polished metal and paired it with a light weight composite side release mechanism which reduces the weight of our buckle by over 50%. The side release is sturdy and easy to use. It doesn't have any components that can stick or stop working over time.

There are also hard-core styles for the rockers out there, like the Spike Collection
and you can resist their new ADORABLE Ladybugs and Bees collection - summer may almost be over but you will be able to smell the fresh cut grass and blooming flowers all year round with this piece for your poochand if you are looking for the truly unique item that will turn some heads - check out the Boho Pet Carriers - vibrant, hand-painted paisley designs embellish these all-leather pet carriers

Tax Deduction for Pet Care Expenses

I don't live in the US - but I found this post on Pugsplace and thought it very necessary to share with you:

H.R. 3501, the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act.

This Act would amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow an individual to deduct up to $3,500 for "qualified pet care expenses" for a legally owned, domesticated, live animal.

As Americans trim budgets to make ends meet, innocent animals should not go without adequate care. Even a small tax deduction for responsible pet owners will go a long way to meet the needs of companion animals, ease the tax burden of those who own a pet (63 percent of all households) and may even encourage more people to provide loving homes to the countless animals that fill America's shelters.

Please take a moment to sign the petition and urge your representative to co-sponsor H.R. 3501.

Pass it along.

Here is a copy of the actual HAPPY bill:

Reduce, reuse, recycle!

via Raise a Green Dog! by Johann The Dog on 8/5/09

A big part of being green is reducing, reusing and recycling! Practiced in this order, the 3-R's process can help you significantly reduce the amount of waste and energy produced and impacted on our environment.

Reducing means reducing waste before you purchase it, or purchasing products that are not wasteful in their packaging or use. Reusing means just that: reusing materials in their original or modified form instead of throwing them away, or pass those materials on to others who could use them too. One man's trash is another man's treasure! And recycling is the art of separating, collecting, processing, and ultimately re-using or re-manufacturing a material that would have been thrown away, and making it into a new product.

Environmentally aware and green consumers help the environment by practicing the 3-R's system and therefore produce less waste. They are buying products that are less toxic to the environment, are made of recycled materials, and contain less packaging. They are re-using purchased items for lots of other purposes. They are maintaining and repairing products instead of adding them to landfills. And, they are participating in recycling programs all over the country.

So how do our dogs play into the reduce, reuse, recycle 3-R's process? Lots of ways. So lets get started:

When you're out and about purchasing products for your pups, take into consideration the amount of packaging associated with that product when selecting which green product you want/need to buy. Many green dog product companies are shifting to less packaging. You can help the process by supporting them if the product meets with your green dog standards.

When you're pup de-stuffs one of their favorite plush toys, you can save the stuffing to use in a new toy that you can make with old clothing or towels. Oh, and be sure and get that squeaker before it's destroyed so you can use it in the new homemade toy, too!

Is it time for a new collar or leash? Donate the old one to a local rescue or shelter. You can also donate some of your newspapers, old towels, baby gates, and other unused items to your local shelter or rescue. They always need help.

Got some old towels and washcloths lying around? Use them for door mats to soak up the dirt your pup may drag in from outside. Or, rip them in strips and braid them for a super cool dog tug toy.

Take your reusable bags every time you go shopping for your dog! And help save those landfills from the dreaded plastic :)

These are just a few suggestions of how you can reduce and reuse items for your dog. There are of course thousands of ideas, and they are only limited by your creativity! Just think before you buy and think before you toss :)

What about recycling? Many of the products and packaging associated with a product are potentially recyclable. Earth911.com has a great website to help you learn all about recycling, what you can and can't recycle, all about the recycling codes and numbers, where there are recycling and curbside pick up in your community, and more. So before you toss it, check and see if you can recycle it!

Here's a little widget we picked up to help you find resources in your community for recycling!

Now, what about those prolific pet food cans and bags? That's the biggest question we get about the 3'R's relating to dogs. And it's one of the ways us dogs have the most impact on the amount of waste that goes into landfills, besides our doo.

So what do you do with the food bags and cans? Here's what we do!

Dog Food Bags - most dog food bags are made with multiple layers designed to keep the dog food fresh. These layers are both paper and plastic. Sadly the plastic layers of these bags are most usually not recyclable. So what can you do? Pull apart and separate the layers of the bags, and recycle the paper layers. You can then reuse the plastic layers after cleaning for quite a few things, like packing items for water tightness, or using them as floor savers when painting.

You can also reuse complete dog food bags for a few things. Turn them inside out and use them for shipping items. Or you can use them as containers or barriers for certain messy items, like used paint stirrers, or to put under your car when changing the oil. You can even use them as knee savers for your Mum when she's out in the garden digging away. And if you just have to throw something out, they make a super trash bag.

Also, we heard recently that Petco and Terracycle are testing a pet-food-bag recycling program in NY & NJ with a possible roll out by year's end. So that may be an option for you. (We'll keep you posted.)

Dog Food Cans - most pet food cans are made out of aluminum now-a-days, some may be made of steel. You can tell which by putting a magnet to the can, it will stick to steel, but not aluminum. And many times it will say on the label. Both aluminum and steel are recyclable materials, so make sure you rinse them out, and we recommend taking off the label before adding to your recycling bin.

One more thought. By adding in or feeding raw and home cooked healthy foods to your dog, you can really reduce the amount of dog food bags and cans you bring into your household. Just make sure you do your research on raw and home cooked meals, see our post - Let's Talk Food!
